About 988

What should I expect if I reach out?

Using 988 is free. When you call or text 988, your conversation is confidential. 988 provides you judgment-free care. Talking with someone can help save your life.

When you call:

  • First, you’ll hear this message that gives you service selection options.
  • We’ll play some hold music while you are connected to a counselor with our Veterans, Spanish-language, LGBTQI+ services, or your local 988 Lifeline contact center.
  • A counselor will say hello and introduce themselves.
  • Your skilled counselor will ask you if you are safe.
  • After they ask about your safety, your counselor will listen to you, understand how your problem is affecting you, provide support, and share any resources that may be helpful.

When you text:

  • When you send a text to 988, you will be given options to connect with a counselor from the Veterans, Spanish-language, LGBTQI+ service, or the main 988 Lifeline.
  • When you text “next” you will be accepting 988’s Terms of Service.
  • You will then need to complete a brief survey to help your counselor understand how they can best support you.
  • You’ll receive a “wait” message with optional questions while we connect you to a counselor.
  • Your counselor will say hello and introduce themselves.
  • Your skilled counselor will ask if you are safe.
  • After they ask about your safety, they will be calm and comforting, listen to you, and provide support. They may also share helpful resources.

Who is 988 for?

Anyone who is struggling can use this service, whether you’re depressed, need to talk about a sensitive issue, or are contemplating suicide. The crisis counselors are here to listen and support you through whatever difficult times you may be facing.

When can I reach out?

988 Lifeline call and text services are offered 24/7, 7 days a week.

Are there specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth who reach out to 988?

LGBTQ+ people under 25 can access 24/7 LGBTQ+ support on 988. To call an LGBTQ-trained crisis counselor, dial 988 and then press 3. To text, send the word PRIDE to 988.

How is 988 different from the Crisis & Suicide Line?

Both crisis lines are very similar, and are available to provide free and confidential support for people in crisis and distress. Since 988 is a national program regulated by federal standards, counselors are required to immediately assess suicide risk at the start of the call.

Since the CSL is a local program primarily handling local calls, that line is particularly enabled to provide fast access to resources in our area.

However, both 988 and CSL are available to provide you support, suicide intervention, and resource referrals.
